STRESS!!!

I have always been terrible about handling stress. I once read that there are two types of people: those who lose weight when they're stressed and those who gain it.

I definitely fall in the latter category.

Only when I'm stressed do I settle for food that falls from a vending machine or read too many of the messages in Dove chocolates.

With final exams, final papers, and a medical conference within the coming weeks, I'm becoming surprisingly overwhelmed. Not to mention, all of these are taking away time from my novel. I find it difficult to shut down my mind when I go to bed because I keep thinking that I could still be writing!

Over the years, people acquire distinct coping mechanisms for stress. I've learned that watching a light hearted television show (recently that includes Modern Family, 30 Rock, or The Office) helps a lot!!

So does....blogging!! I love reading about the passion, strength, and persistence in my fellow bloggers. It truly allows me to escape and motivates me to keep going!! Thank you :)

How do you deal with stress??

Do you have any quick fixes that help you calm down?

  1. I've spent years making myself able to slough off stress when it shows up. As long as i acknowledge that i AM feeling stressed, and what it is that is stressing me, then i'm able to let it go.

  2. I've said this before, I'll say it again, I clean my house, from top to bottom. I take out my stress on the dust monsters, I get a nice clean house. Then I can settle down and write.

  3. Sheesh I wish I was more like Anne. I read. It always helps. And running. And cookie dough. Lots and lots of cookie dough :)

    Hope you feel better soon!

  4. I completely agree, Crystal! Cookie dough helps a lot :) After reading your comment, I'm going to go get some cookie dough ice cream!!

Anne: I wish I cleaned when stressed; you're an inspiration!!

Falen: That's amazing that you have such great self control and awareness. I hope I get there soon!

  5. I eat chocolate. I'm eating a box of Purdy's chocolates right now. I also have the headache to go along with the stress due to the chocolate ... but it's chocolate. Like I'm gonna let something like stress keep me from enjoying the one passion I have in life ;)

  6. You sound extremely busy and well deserving of a Dove chocolate or two.

I wish I loved to alleviate my stress through dust bunny demise. However, I settle for reading, a back massage from my Dear Hubby or cuddling down with my kids.

A phone call to my big sister also goes a long way in making me feel better.

  7. Oh thats a though one. I try to calm myself, and I actually fit on the first category, I loose a lot of weight. So what I do is try do adapt. i.e. I take 2 hours to go o my job, so I take my notepad and work on my book during the train travel. So when I come back home, there´s less stress. We always have to try to balance. And always, certaintly, know our limits.

  9. I'm actually a lot like you. I turn to chocolate (or anything highly sugar-ish) and television. Although for me, watching "The Tudors" relaxes me. Aside from all the nice male eye-candy, it also makes me realize things could be a lot worse if I had to worry about things like the plague, too.

And with everything you have going on, it sounds like you absolutely deserve the right to stress a little bit!

  10. I read a survey in the UK that said 9 out of 10 people like chocolate... I think the tenth person lied :0)

  11. I run or take a very long walk. Walks are great because you can stomp.

  12. That's a great cartoon! I'm a lot like you. Sweets/coffee are a big pick me up and I love 30 Rock!

I seem to be a glutton for stress punishment, always taking on more than I can handle. And for many years, it involved graduate school and a job.

Now that writing and subbing are my main stresses, I handle them much better since I've found the blogging community too. My stress levels were higher before I posted my frustrations.

  13. I love the cartoon you found to go with this post! I have a three-fold solution to stress 1) chocolate. A Dove Bar will help me get through the 2-3 hours of a stressful day, until I get home to 2) re-watch a favorite movie and finally 3) pick up a good book to read.

If I have time, I might try to skip the candy bar and go far a walk instead. It's healthier and the fresh air and exercise does wonders!

  16. Reading in a bubble bath, chocolate cake, crunchy food, work out, rom-com movies, sleep-- those de-stress me. Which of these I do depends on what I'm stressed about and if I have time.

I hope you found time to relax over the weekend. :)

    Love,
    Lola

  17. If I can't sleep due to ideas running through my mind, I'll recite a simple line over and over again like 'mary had a little lamb' and or 'all you need is love, la, la, la.' Works every time! Thank you for dropping by my blog!

  18. I try to remember how lucky I am and imagine something much more horrible happening to me, to put it in perspective. It could be imagining a sore throat or a tsunami, whatever works.
Good luck with all the stressful stuff! And btw, that cartoon totally cracked me up.

  20. A bit of alcohol always helps! ;) but a warm bed, comfortable setting and something to take your mind off of stress is helpful too. Drink something soothing with dinner (white russian, gin & tonic, wine) and then watch a good movie (or in your case TV show) so that you can live in an alternate life for 45 minutes, then maybe read a good book so you can disappear into another scenario and forget about yours for the time being, then go to sleep early!!!!! Tomorrow is a new day! :)
