What Gets You Through the Wee Working Hours?

I am in turbo writing mode this week. (Or least, what I personally consider turbo writing mode.) I've been cranking out around 1500-3000 words a day and am hoping to keep that up.

I've been reading a lot of posts about writing and other work stretches, so I thought I would share some things that keep me motivated and make it more fun. I discovered some of these while I studied for the MCAT and I hope that they are of some help!

1.) Dove chocolate:

2.) Music from YouTube

3.) Amazon reviews and author interviews

(These remind me that everyone has to start somewhere!)

4.) Eucalyptus spearmint hand cream
(Bath and Body Works)

5.) Inspiring videos on Ted.com

(Check out this great one from Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love)

All of these help me reach my happy place:

Do you have any go-to things that keep you focused?

Happy Writing!

  5. Music helps me get in the mood when I'm struggling. Wow! 1500-3000 a day is amazing. I rarely manage that these days, but will hopefully get back into my chapter-a-day drive!

  6. Dove chocolate is my favorite!

Unfortunately, I don't really have much in the way of focusing advice. Mainly, I think, because I've taught myself that when it's time to get in the zone, I'm in the zone. That came about from discipline, I guess--forcing myself to be there. It certainly paid off for all the long papers I had to write in college.

Excellent wordcounts! I hope you can keep it up!

  9. Good for you on all that writing! Wow! I think I get motivated when I give myself a time limit--kind of like you have. I know what I'd like to accomplish and so I work hard to it for that date.

  12. I've never heard of ted.com. I'll have to check that out! And Dove chocolate...the best.

I always keep a large supply of drinking water and a baggie full of hard lifesavers close by. I can't write without them!

Your blog template is beautiful, by the way.

  15. Starbucks peppermint mocha. Doesn't matter if I get it as a frappacino, iced drink or hot... as long as I get a venti I'm good to go for a couple hours of writing time. :D

  19. I like your picture inspirations.

The comfy spot in my living room with coffee at my side and music playing on my iPod helps keep me writing.

  23. If I hadn't been on my own writing madness, I would have found this post earlier! Good luck with your writing. Wine is my preferred necessity, but I like the hand lotion. It sounds relaxing, like you could massage it into every sore writing muscle. :)
